UNBELIEVABLE!
Chelsea and Arsenal’s seasons have both been undone in slightly more than 24 hours. Both games were fitting metaphors for why both teams lost out on the title. Arsenal played with more skill and possession and dictated the tempo of the match, but couldn’t maintain the discipline to rise to the challenge when it really mattered. Chelsea, meanwhile, finally got burned trying to hold on to a 1-0 win. So many occasions over the past few seasons have Chelsea ground out those excruciating 1-0 wins and barely barely scraped victory. I remember Wigan’s first premier league game when they were so cruelly undone by Hernan Crespo on literally the past kick of the game. I remember Ferguson going directly over to Paul Jewell and whispering in his ear that his team deserved at least a point. All I saw today was Avram Grant’s perpetual scowl drop about 2 degrees south. You need a protractor to measure the man’s disappointment.
Surely, surely Abramovich is going through the numbers database on his diamond-encrusted blackberry and going “Del Bosque…. Hiddink… Hmm… Scolari, wonder how much he’s making?”
Manchester United are 5 points ahead with four games remaining and a goal difference 19 points higher than Chelsea’s. If you look up drivers seat in the dictionary, I think you’ll see the United logo. It’s not done and dusted yet, if we lose against Blackburn and Chelsea then we’re completely hooped, but we are definitely masters of our own destiny with a bit of breathing room as well.
And what a way to score… 92nd minute… injury time…. Emile-fucking-Heskey… You know it was always somehow in the cards. How many games have Chelsea won like that? I think Chelsea deserved to win the game, but they blew it. Wigan really only had one good chance (Sibierski towards the end) and that was it.
Epic.
Here’s a link to Essien’s goal.
They’ve also updated the link and Heskey’s equalizer is also on there. 1000goals is always first to act for videos.
BTW, Scharner produced probably the best hard-man moment of the season when he flung his face directly at Ballack’s foot to knock the ball away.
